Homework is the same as last week for the most part.
Continue to work on spelling student names and use them in a story or sentences.
Fill out your food chart and bring it in by Friday.
Bring in a baby picture by Wednesday! I will be creating a board so we can guess who is who.
No Sharing on Friday!
Also, in the future, and this week, all necessary sheets will be located in the middle tray on top of the entryway shelf. The food chart and a class list are there this week. Also, you can turn homework into the top tray of the stack of three trays.
Thanks!

We started a new read aloud and all the kids are totally into it. We are reading The Indian in the Cupboard. Some of the kids have seen the movie, (Uggh, Hollywood) but it has not detracted us. It is also my first time reading the book which makes the whole experience really exciting. We will be doing more activities around the book in an effort to help students learn to respond to books.
Jonathon (Claire's dad) came in this week and did a cool project with the kids and crystals. Luckily, he didn't taste borox like me when the Ks and I did our crystal experiment. The older kids really enjoyed making the crystals. Thanks Jonathon!
Phina rocked Science Friday and did a wonderful demonstration of how gravity works and how weight does not necessarily mean that something will fall faster to the ground. Almost everyone was involved in the lesson and only one person, Sebastian, made an accurate hypothesis about which object would fall to the ground first. She also showed how wind resistance can slow an object down.
POETRY is the name of our game these days with writing. We have been reading Shel Silverstein in class and discussing different forms of poetry. We are trying to create a book of poetry and have a reading before break. The reading will likely be the 20th or 21st at a place yet to be determined. If you have any poetry at home please choose to read it a home too an encourage your student to write a poem about a topic they enjoy.
Many kids were excited this week when we reinstituted quiet reading time in the class. Sometimes there is so much going on at Trillium that students never really get a chance to just chill with a book. I think that we all enjoyed the time and it will continue.
Students are also busily working to prepare for Performance Night this Friday. We can't wait to see all them in action. Seating will start at 6:15 so that we can get started right at 6:30.
By the way, thanks for all the encouragement with the gender switch day. It was surprisingly nice to wear a dress. Although the cat calls got a little old.
I will try to have more pictures and would love to get more student writing on the blog. I need parent helpers to transcribe student stories and writing if anyone has the time.
Finally, if anyone has some old records laying around their house we could really use them this week by Wednesday. They will be used for an art project this week. Also, I am going to put a bin out for caps. Later in the year I want to do a cap art project and it would be nice to have a variety by the time that comes. It will be near the front of the room this week.
Thanks for being so supportive and helpful. Your kids are awesome!

December 3
Here is some news for the week.
We will be going to the Belmont Fire Station on Tuesday for a field trip. Drivers so far are me, Courtney, Shanna, and Martin. If you are able to drive please sign up tomorrow on the list. We will be leaving at 10 and hopefully, if the weather is acceptable we will picnic at Laurelhurst Park. If not we will just come back to school for lunch. Bring a sack lunch!
Phina is signed up for Science Friday this week and I hear that we are going to be doing something related to gravity. Can't wait Phina.
The Scholastic Book orders have been a little confusing so far but no more. There is a Scholastic box on the entryway shelf where people can drop off orders in the envelope for orders. Also, we will try to use this box for order pickup depending on the volume of orders received.
On Sunday the Magnus family will be hosting us for our 2nd Class Potluck of the year.
The event will also be designed as a winter clothes swap so bring your old kids clothes so that other families can use and abuse them. Bring a dish, drinks or snacks if you are able. I know it is far away for many families, but our SE crew has to deal with that issue constantly. There house is really cool and spacious and down the block from Lents Park. It should be a good time. Lets go see how it is on the other side of Burnside.
EVENT INFO: Sunday, 12/9, 11:30 to 1:30
Claire's House
5323 SE 89th
Please remember to mark your calendar for Friday, December 14th at 6:30. We will be holding our annual Performance Night in the Multipurpose Room. There will be singing, dancing and two plays performed by K.1.2 students. It is always an entertaining event and the kids love it. That said, if anyone knows how to sew yellow jacket costumes, please let me know.

Week of October 29
HELLO ALL,
The class is going awesome lately and I am really starting to see our group come together more as a community instead of just the old crew and the rookies. Friendships are growing and students are beginning to work together more effectively. Mediation is much more effective than it was at the beginning of the year and students are learning how to avoid conflict and manage it when it comes.
We finished up our unit on Immigration and are now moving to the Midwest where we will be talking about the Great Lakes, farms, and weather. Immigration was a success as I think that students understand what it is and some of the reasons it occurs, but I think that next time I will try to focus more on current events around immigration. It was difficult for the students to put themselves in the shoes of an Irish immigrant near 1900. We live and learn.
If anyone has any pictures from the pumpkin patch, please let me know so that we can post them to the blog. I know Megan has set up a Flickr.com account for the class where we can post pictures and then view them through the blog. You can either email them to Megan or visit www.flickr.com.

SCIENCE FRIDAYS
Thanks to those of you who have signed up for upcoming Science Fridays. For those of you who don't know what this is here is the lowdown. Your family signs up for a week and that week you bring home the Science Friday binder. The binder contains three books of different science experiments for our age kids. The family then performs (practices) the experiment or lesson at home for Friday presentation. The Friday lesson can be simply a demonstration or it could be more in depth where all the students perform the experiment. The family who does the experiment also fills out the assessment worksheet which is in the binder for record keeping. It is fun and keeps families involved in our activities.

LEARNING PLAN EXHIBITION
We will be having an event on Thursday, November 8th from 3:15 to 7:15. This will be an exhibition of what individual students have been working on from their learning plans and other projects in the class. The event is a drop-in where parents and students can come at their leisure and talk about their work. It is also a great opportunity for students to see what others are doing and maybe even get great ideas for future learning plans.
THANK YOUS
It is hard to remember all the thank yous all the time, but I hope you all know that I appreciate all that you do for the classroom. Here are just a few for the week.
Thanks to all the people who helped bake something for the preschool Cake Walk. It was a lot of fun and we raised money for books.
Thanks to Ellie for starting a sewing class on Mondays from 2-245. The kids needed it since I can't sew to save my life.
Thanks to Mykle and Phina for chiseling away at the lincoln logs which will soon be arriving on our playground.
Thanks again for the computer. It is awesome to be able to print and access the Internet in the room.
Thanks to last year's parents for my massage from Nephyr. I have still not taken the time to indulge myself, but I think it will be coming soon.
Thanks to Micki for organizing and taking the lead on the Scholastic Book Orders. I love those things.
Thanks to Nephyr and Aaron for continuing to provide an awesome snack for the kids and saving me a trip to the store. It helps out a lot!

Week of October 22

Challenge Words: immigration, Ellis Island, refugee, country, state, city, New York
*Bring in pictures of things that start with the letter H.
*Answer ancestor questions with your parents. (to be written in class)

Classroom Updates
Class Meeting has been really developing and Django moderated the last meeting where we passed a proposal to make the loft a quiet space for activities and reading. Many of the students also attended the first Lower School Meeting of the year. Some of our students brought a proposal to the committee and the proposal was heard loud and clear by the teachers. The proposal never made it to the meeting because teachers felt it was a safety issue and needed to be addressed without student oversight. Thanks to Mason, Stella, and Django (and the class contributions) the outside boat will be bolted down to make it more safe for kid play.
Pokemon Club is meeting on Thursdays during recess and is going well. Pokemon had infiltrated the classroom for a short period of time but since the boundary was set that club meets on Thursday, the students have been responsive and responsible about the issue.
Immigration
We have been studying immigration and what that meant for people in the late 1800s. We have been discussing what immigration means and the different types of immigrants that have come to our country for the varying reasons. We have discussed slavery, religious freedom and this week we will be talking about a different kind of immigrant: the refugee.
Students are also working in small groups to develop a “storyline” of an immigrant family in New York. Groups are creating individual characters and houses to show where they would live and how it would look to be in an immigrant family. There is one group acting as a Native American family. We have talked about how they were not immigrants to our land.
Thank Yous, snack, sleepover, etc.
It seems I always have so many thank yous but they just keep coming. The Jorgensons have helped out our classroom with providing an Internet ready room, calculators and hand held pencil sharpeners (whew.) Misty, Nikos and Ellie braved the sleepover and survived the restless legs and wild dance party. It was a blast to see kids being kids even if it drives their parents to the edge. We love our kids! Nephyr and Aaron are also continuing to provide very healthy options for our kids at lunch and the community is really helping out with the snack donations. Thanks a lot! The kids and their bodies love the snacks.
Field Trips and Halloween
We will be starting to turn our attention to the Midwest and farms. This week we are heading to the Pumpkin Patch. This will be just like in years past and is a fun annual outing. On Halloween, we are doing something a little different. We will be attempting to avoid the sugar craziness and will visit a farm in Corbett. This trip will introduce students to the real underworkings of a farm and square dancing is planned. It should be fun. When we return to school the students will finish the day by writing and sharing spooky Halloween stories.
White Take Home Folders
Some of you have noticed the white take home folders on the entryway shelf. These may be used more frequently in the future but for now they are simply a vehicle for me to send work home and for students and parents to keep track of the books students are reading. The folders will probably only come home every three weeks to correlate with the theme units. When it is sent home, please bring it back empty the next day. Thanks!
Parent Conferences
These are coming up and will be scheduled for the week before Thanksgiving break. Just giving you guys a heads up!

Week of October 8th
Hello all,
We had a great week in our class that was culminated by our first Science Friday lesson on plate tectonics, a field trip to the library and park with our middle school buddies on pedicabs and a student performed play. All is good in the land of K12. We are trying to figure out the whole posting photos to the blog in an easy way, but it is still under process.
Off to the East Coast
For the next three weeks we will be studying the New England area of the country and talking about immigration. We will be creating a storyline around six different families in the NE who come from different parts of the world. We will be asking you to help your student understand where they come from and help them discover some of the history surrounding your particular family. The unit will culminate with a potluck lunch of all the cultures we have created on Friday, October 26th at 11:30. The time may change so stay informed.
Thanks
Thanks to Jonathon, Ellie and the whole crew at PDX Pedicabs. www.pdxpedicabs.com, It was awesome to see the kids experience a completely new form of transportation. Thanks to Becky for coming in and doing a lesson on plate tectonics for the students. It was awesome to have an expert in the room. And a premature thanks to Mykle for offering to slice and chisel kid size lincoln logs for the outside space. It should be interesting what they build.
Homework
Spelling Words:
who, what, when, why, where, for, at, am, over, did
Use words to create five questions to ask an ancestor.
Challenge: immigration, Ellis Island, culture
Math: Take a math sheet on the entry bookshelf. It is called tomorrow's number. The number is 44.
Challenge Math: Ask me for a Salmon Run energy activity. This is using big numbers and advanced problem solving.
Make a word search using names of students in the class. Blank sheet should be available this week. (Thanks Watsons)
Pictures should be on the way as it was a very exciting week.

Week of September 24th
A huge thank you to Megan and Matt for hosting the potluck this weekend. I know it is hard to prepare your home for a bunch of people to come over, but it was great as always. I love hanging out with all you guys. We have such a great community! Next time we will shoot for a park setting.
HOMEWORK
Spelling Words: Same as last week. Spelling Bee on Friday.
Write your words in ABC order if you can.
Measure yourself at home. How many inches are you? How many centimeters? What about your parents, brothers or sisters?
Create a map of your bedroom.
MT. HOOD FIELD TRIP
Okay, this field trip is a biggie. We have to travel 60 miles down I-84 and arrive as close to 9:30 as possible. I am asking everyone to try and arrive to school at 8:15 on Thursday so we can get everyone on the road by 8:30. Please make sure that your student is there by 8:30 at the latest or else we may have to leave them behind. If you are running late please call my cell phone at 503-201-5550. Also, DON"T FORGET BOOSTERS AND CARSEATS!!! It is the law for kids to be in them.
SCIENCE FRIDAYS
I know I put a sign telling everyone to sign up but then failed to mention it at parent night or explain myself whatsoever. There will be a binder on the shelf next to the white cabinet this week for families to sign up for weekly science demonstrations in the class on Friday. There are two science experiment books in the binder and if you sign up then you take those home and work an experiment with your student. Then, on Friday, we have a demonstration. Please sign up if you can.
SNACK
So we figure that in our class we are basically doubling our snack budget compared to the rest of the K12 classes. We have about $400 budgeted but we anticipate needing close to 800. I have told Nephyr that my budget for snack is higher because I believe food is extremely important to learning so I take other money out of my supply budget. This leaves us with about $200 unaccounted for in our class's yearly snack budget. Over the length of the year I am sure we will obtain this through donations to the snack folder. Just thought I would update you guys and let you know the 411. The snack donation folder is taped on the side of the white jackets cabinet. Thanks.
Walking Field Trips
We will be taking a walking field trip to the North Portland Library soon and I am looking for a volunteer or two for either this Thursday or next Thursday. Let me know if either works for you. Thanks
There will be no Garden class this week.
Also, we will be having some extra help this week and through December at least. My friend Ken is looking to get some experience in the classroom to pursue certification and it should be great to have him. He will be helping during Menu groups from 9:15 to 10:15 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If you have any questions, then just let me know.

First Day Jitters
The first day is in the books and we are off and running. Students made self portraits today and learned a little about each other. New friendships began and old ones were renewed. We will be learning about our school this week and the community we learn in. We will be discussing our rights and responsibilities, the school constitution, learning plans, mediation and ways we can respect Trillium. We will also be setting up our class rules and learning where things are in the room.
Here is this week's HOMEWORK.
Students should write their full name, address and phone number. They should practice remembering these at home and be prepared to show they know them at school. I will be quizzing them.
Bring in a picture of your family doing something.
Spelling/Vocabulary Words - Trillium, school, rights
*Use these words in a sentence.
FORMS
If you have not turned in all the forms necessary there will be a note in your take home folders next week. We will let you know what you are missing and remind you to get in in ASAP. Also, please bring back copies of your drivers license and insurance cards if you have any possibility of driving on field trips this year. We can't let you drive other children without this information on file. Thanks!
SUPPLIES
If you have already brought in supplies then thank you. If you haven't and still need to get them I would really appreciate pocket folders in packs of 20. Instead of getting glue, tape or colored pencils I need folders and spiral journals (one subject). Also, hot glue is a hot item in our class along with popsicle sticks.
DRIVERS!!!!
We need drivers for Monday! If there is any way you can drive to the Mt. Hood Railroad just let me know or sign up on the list outside our classroom.
Thanks,
Billy

Welcome to the New School Year
The new school year is upon us and I can’t be more excited to see everyone again and welcome our community/s newcomers. Summer is tremendous for teachers because we can relax and reconnect, but it’s also a time of reflection for us to look at things we did right the previous year and areas where we can improve. I am thrilled to be able to build on last year’s success and lessons learned.
First off, all of you should have received a packet in the mail. Please fill those packets out to the best of your ability by the time of our home visit. It will make the home visit less business like and more to the point, which is for me to establish a strong relationship with your student. If you have any questions about the packet you can call the school.
I have so much to tell you all and my giddiness about the content and activities we have planned are too much to bare. That will come in time and the Back to School Night will be a great time for parents to get a better understanding of what we do at Trillium and what our goals are for the year and beyond.
Megan Klepp and Courtney Brennan have once again agreed to be our parent liasons. They are totally awesome and can usually answer or field parent concerns. Thank you guys for doing the job again. It is so great to have consistency from year to year.
HOME VISITS
Here is the lowdown on the home visits. At the visit I will be talking with your student and will probably do some reading assessment. This is just a starting point for me, but lets me know where everyone is in their indvidual learning process. You can expect me to be there close to an hour.
COMMUNICATION
I am hoping to use a blog as a primary communication tool, but copies of entries will be also put in people’s folders until they tell me this is not necessary. It saves paper to simply post electronically, but if you can’t or don’t want to be connected to your computer screen all the time, you can simply check your folders or my Class Community Board outside the room. But it is important to check these weekly. Megan and Courtney will be developing a class roster and phone list for the parents.
HOMEWORK
Those of you who were with me last year have not yet experienced homework in our classroom. Available homework is a necessary tool for learning and extending the classroom to the home. There will be consistent homework and much of it will involve getting things from home or investigating their world. We will have optional spelling lists and parents will be involved in home science experimentation. There will be a signup in the classroom for parents to sign up for the SCIENCE PACK. Jackie used to use this as a way to integrate science and I think it will be great. Every week a family signs up to take home the pack and choose a science lesson to model on Friday after sharing time. It should be great fun.
FIELD TRIPS
For those of you new to Trillium, not only are we teachers, parents, custodians—we are bus drivers. We like to plan relevant and exciting field trips for our students, but Trillium doesn’t own a bus and PPS won’t let us use theirs. Therefore, we always need parents to drive for field trips. Already, you should be trying to free up all day on September 17th and the morning (early afternoon) of October 2nd. We will be riding on the Mount Hood Railroad and visiting the Bonneville Dam as part of our Pacific Northwest theme.
In order to drive on a field trip we will need your license and insurance information on file. Megan and Courtney will be handling this and will attempt to get as many people certified to drive as possible. If you don’t drive then we will need you as chaperones on MAX/Tri-Met trips. Field trips are usually fun and it is a great way to get to know other students in the class. Please get your information to Megan or Courtney.
VOLUNTEERING
If you want to volunteer before school I could really use the help. I have specific jobs to finish in the classroom. I may not be in the building much over the next two weeks, but that doesn't mean you can't help. If you let me know when you are coming and what you can do then I can prepare for you. Here are some of the things I need done.
Put handrails on loft.
Paint desk, bookshelp
Get shelf from Costco
Clean white shelf and cabinet.
Wash windows including scraping tape.
Apply frosting to garage windows.
Hang new white board.
Run power strip under carpet.
Carpet loft.
Cover new stage with oil cloth
wash dishes
If you are willing to help then comment or email me.
There will also be many ongoing opportunities to volunteer in class. Here are some of the available jobs.
Friday cleaner (could be every other Friday)
Reading Group Leader
Math/Literacy Menu Helper
Copier, Laminator, Stuffer
Photographer
Driver – I love drivers!!!
Recess or Lunch Duty
You could even teach a class during INTENSIVES or in the afternoons during ILP Time.
SNACK
We provide a healthy snack daily for the children. Nephyr Jacobson takes the lead with this attempts to get great snacks that are nutritionally sound, but cost can be difficult. We keep a snack donations folder out so that people can throw in a few bucks if they feel like it, which keeps our costs down. It is not a required fee, but if you can give a little we appreciate it. You can also send your student with their own snack, but please limit the sugar.
ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL
School starts Monday, September 10 at 8:30 am.
Students should be at school and in class no later than 8:30. I understand that students may need to eat their breakfast so there will be a choice/breakfast time until 8:45. At 8:45 class will begin and students should be ready for learning. In the afternoon, students will be dismissed to parents at 3:00. Please try to get your kids on time. If students are still in my room at 3:15 then I will take them to aftercare, which costs you money and stretches our aftercare numbers. If you are going to be late, please call me on my cell phone. Thanks!
I am sure there is a lot more that I need to tell you to be adequately prepared for the year. We are all very excited for the new year. Here is my contact information. You can feel free to contact me whenever.
